Changes have been made to the commonwealth legislation to recognise an electronic prescription as a legal form of prescription to allow supply of medicines. Electronic prescriptions are an alternative to paper prescriptions which will allow people a convenient method to access their medications and may lessen risk of infection being spread in general practice waiting rooms and community pharmacies. Paper prescriptions will still be available.
Currently only the token method of electronic prescriptions is available. In this instance prescriptions are delivered in the form of a token to a patients preferred email or smartphone. This token can then be used at the pharmacy to dispense a patients medication. If there are any repeats on the prescription a new token will be sent to the patient when the prescription is dispensed.
At Keiraville Pharmacy we are ‘Electronic Prescription Ready’ and are already processing electronic prescriptions. For more information visit https://digitalhealth.gov.au/get-started-with-digital-health/electronic-prescriptions or come into store.
